Accidents Happening

Israel has been rocked by two horrific family tragedies in one week in Jerusalem.

First, a gas leak in a building, which exploded, wiping out a family of three, Avraham Toffman, 56, his wife Galit, 42, and their two-year-old son Yosef,  in Gilo, Jerusalem.

Then, a pesticide used by an exterminator to kill termites in a home, poisoned two girls to death - two-year-old Yael Gross and her four-year-old sister Avigail.

The first incident also injured 11 other people and destroyed the apartment building; the second has left two other siblings, the six and eight-year-old brothers Michael and Yitzhak Gross, in critical condition.

In both cases, professionals had been alerted prior to the tragedies.

The smell of gas had led the Toffman's to call the Supergas supplier company, who sent out a technician on Sunday night. The technician reportedly went through his prescribed procedure, including switching off the main valve of the apartment, pending a return to the building the next morning. At 1pm a huge blast ripped through the building with the fatal results.

In the case of the Gross family, they apparently went to the emergency medical center, Terem, in Jerusalem. However, the doctors there did not suspect that the symptoms they saw had been caused by the fumigation.    
The exterminator used phosphine, and apparently poisoning is highly unusual, and so very unlikely to be correctly diagnosed by medics. In a worse case scenario, there is no antidote to the poison, beside fresh air and time.

Both the gas technician and the pest exterminator were arrested, and may face charges of criminal negligence. 

Both tragic incidents are a reminder of how much we all depend upon professionals, literally for our very lives. 

The taxi/bus drivers; car technicians; all medics; electricians; policemen & soldiers; social workers; building engineers...etc..the list is endless, of people we passively entrust our lives to every day.

Sometimes things go tragically wrong, as happened this past week. 

Most of the time, we simply take these people for granted, who shoulder huge responsibilities, usually for low pay, and very little recognition - at least, as long as they do their jobs right.

    These are really bad news. We should learn from these tragedies and proper steps to be made so such accidents doesn't happen in future.

Marrying a Soloveitchik

Mazaltov! My nephew, Gedaliah Kestenbaum married Devori Soloveitchik in Jerusalem last week. Gedaliah has married into rabbinical aristocracy .    Devori is the daughter of  Rabbi Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik, and the grand-daughter of Rabbi  Meshulam Dovid (Reb Dovid) Soloveitchik , who is Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Brisk (one of the two) in Jerusalem . The Soloveitchik's are a rabbinical dynasty descended from Rabbi  Yosef Dov (HaLevi) Soloveitchik (The "Beis Halevi") and his son Rabbi  Chaim Soloveitchik ("Reb Chaim Brisker"). Rav Chaim's sons Rabbi  Yitzchak Zev (Reb Velvel) Soloveitchik ("The GRIZ" The Brisker Rov) and Rabbi  Moshe Soloveitchik seem to have gone in different hashkafik directions. Whereas Reb Velvel's descendents are predominantly right wing hareidim, Rav Moshe's branch are leaders in the Modern Orthodox/National Religious hashkafa – most notably Rav Joseph Ber Soloveitchik ("The Rav")

Hoax Letter Sent to Synagogue

            (Beis Tefillah Synagogue, Ramat Beit Shemesh) The following hoax letter has been sent to members of the Beis Tefillah Synagogue board of management, as if it was written by Rabbi CM [ed. name respectfully withheld] who serves as their rabbi: I think that as long as David Morris sets policy for L.A [ed. Lema'an Achai ], and is their public face,  I will not allow L.A. to use the Shul for fundraising purposes. This will change if: 1)David M apologizes publicly for stating,and insinuating again and again(in many forums,but especially in his childish Tzedek Tzedek blog) that , as a group ,  "Rabbis" (of RBSA ) are guilty of aiding and abetting and enabling child molesters.(And that of course that leaves LA to come to the rescue of our children.)
